In Kind Donations
Heartland Alliance’s Community Resources department coordinates, accepts and distributes donated goods to the thousands of individuals served through Heartland Alliance programs. Donated goods, also known as in-kind gifts, maybe items such as clothing, household items, children’s books, nonperishable food, or any other non-monetary items given to nonprofit organizations for philanthropic use. Community Resources accepts in-kind donations at Heartland Alliance year-round.

With meals and/or holiday dinners (year-round)
Everyday is a struggle for our clients; a family or medical emergency can put a family at the edge of survival. We give gift cards to clients in severe crisis. Provide one or more $75 Jewel, Ultra or Aldi gift cards to help provide a meal for a family.
Clothing drives (seasonal)
Collect gently used and clean (no rips, stains, etc.) seasonal clothing from your office, school or place of worship to benefit needy Chicagoans. Since storage space is limited, please call to arrange the drive in advance.
Hygiene or Home Starter Kits (May and November)
Supply Heartland Alliance with full-sized hygiene items such as soap, shampoo, lotion, toothbrushes and toothpaste. You can also donate home starter items such as brooms and dustpans, dish and paper towels, trashcans and bags, cleaning supplies (e.g., oven and glass cleaner, disinfectants, kitchen cleanser, dish detergent), rubber/latex gloves, etc., that will be given to those in transitioning from the streets and shelters into their new apartments. Items must be new and unopened.
Adopt-A-Family or Program Campaigns (year-round)
Provide a needy family or individuals with much needed basic necessities throughout the year or during the holidays. Heartland Alliance will provide you with the names, ages, needs and wishes of your adopted family members. You can have as much (meeting your families at their homes or program office) or as little involvement as you’d like.
Baby Hygiene Kits (May and November)
Help a newborn have a brighter future by putting together a baby supply kit to include receiving blankets, diapers and pins, baby socks, soap, undershirts and play sets, bottles and formula.
Donate your furniture and help to make a house, a home
Your sofa, dining room set, end table may no longer fit your lifestyle, but it still has a lot of love left to give – why not donate it to a good home, instead of putting it out to pasture? For low-income families, buying furniture and household items often comes down to having to go without; difficult choices between food, prescription drugs, children’s clothes, or school supplies must be made. By donating your furniture to Heartland Alliance, you are ensuring that it goes where it is most needed, families who have lost their possessions in fires or floods, refugees forced to flee war-torn countries leaving their belongings behind, women who have been abused and formerly homeless families.
How to Donate Household Items to Heartland Alliance
- Our staff must approve all donated items. Please do not bring items to our offices without prior approval.
- Your donated items go directly to a needy family. Therefore, we ask that you help us preserve the dignity of our participants by donating only items that are clean, in good condition, and in full working condition.
- To keep our administrative costs down, Heartland Alliance uses staff and volunteers to arrange donation pick-ups. We can only pick up donations in Chicagoland (Cook, DuPage, Will, and McHenry counties). Please have your donation packed and ready prior to your scheduled pick-up.
We appreciate the effort of any donation, but there are some items that we are unable to accept. Our program staff have the final decision on all donations and are unable to accept any item which is damaged or soiled, or including in the following list.
